About Own Our Streets

Since people began driving cars, we have redefined how we move along our shared public spaces: our roadways.  For more than 100 years we have accepted “accidents” as an unpleasant but unavoidable part of movement, and whether we’re walking, waiting for a bus, or riding in the passenger seat, we accept the everyday risk of serious, life-altering crashes. We accept broken, pitted sidewalks, street lights that haven’t worked in years, safety improvements that only seem intended for “that” neighborhood, and aggressive, high-speed drivers that turn local roadways into hostile territories.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Own Our Streets has a bold, simple mission:  to cultivate truly safe, accessible and inclusive transportation for every roadway user, regardless of income, ability, or how you move.

We empower people to SEE each other on their community’s roadways, and see how their choices might change to more safely share that space. We inspire communities to respect the humanity within each of us.  And we bridge the gap between community and key safety stakeholders, by gathering authentic lived experience and expertise from people, and by collaborating with them to guide systemic change at the local level, one roadway at a time.

Through public workshops, community outreach and engagement campaigns, walking and bicycling safety assessments, curriculum development and more, Own Our Streets serves State and local governments, school districts, non-profit centers and community-based organizations.

Let us help make YOUR community one where every person can walk, bike, roll, or ride, without fear of being harmed in a crash.
